5 signs your brand messaging isn’t working (and how to fix it)

Written by Meghan Downs

When was the last time you gave your messaging a proper check-up?

Just like your car, your brand messaging needs a regular MOT. Because even if your business is running fine on the surface, things can start to drift under the bonnet.

Maybe you’ve evolved, your offers have changed, or your confidence has grown – but your words haven’t kept up. Suddenly, you’re noticing that:

  • You’re getting fewer enquiries from the right people

  • Your message doesn’t feel quite “you” anymore

  • You’re constantly rewriting things and still not happy with how they sound

If that’s ringing a few bells, it might be time to run a quick diagnostic.

Here are five signs your brand messaging might be missing the mark – and how to get it running smoothly again.

1. People don’t instantly “get” what you do

If someone lands on your website or LinkedIn profile today, would they immediately understand what you do, who it’s for, and why it matters?

If the answer’s no (or even “kind of”), that’s your check engine light flashing.

Unclear messaging is like driving with a foggy windscreen – you can’t see where you’re going, and neither can your audience. You might be using great words, but if they’re wrapped up in jargon or vague promises, your message gets lost in the mist.

How to fix it

Take a step back and look at your copy like a stranger would. Is it clear? Concise? Instantly recognisable? If not, it’s time to wipe things down and bring your message back into focus.

When people can “get it” straight away, everything else – from enquiries to conversions – starts to move in the right direction.

2. Your message doesn’t reflect who you are now

This is one of the most common problems I see – especially for creative business owners who’ve grown and refined their services over time.

You’ve evolved. Your clients have evolved. But your words? They’re still speaking to a past version of your business.

When that happens, you’ll start attracting “almost right” clients – people who love what you used to offer, not what you do now.

How to fix it

Review your website and social bios with your current clients in mind. Do your words reflect what they care about most right now? Or are you still leaning on old language that no longer fits?

Your messaging should evolve with you. When it does, you’ll naturally attract the clients and opportunities that match where you’re heading – not where you’ve been.

3. You sound like everyone else in your industry

This one’s tough but worth asking: if someone swapped your business name with a competitor’s, would the rest of your copy still make sense?

If so, you’re blending in – not standing out.

When you start sounding the same as everyone else, your dream clients scroll right past. Because they’re not just buying a service; they’re buying you – your personality, your quirks, and your unique approach.

How to fix it

Think about what makes you different. Maybe it’s your tone of voice, your values, or your process. Whatever it is, lean into it. The right clients will love you for it.

Don’t be afraid to show more of yourself – it’s how the right people recognise that you’re the one for them.

4. Your words don’t make people feel anything

You can have the clearest, most polished copy in the world – but if it doesn’t make people feel something, it won’t connect.

If your posts are getting polite likes but not meaningful replies, if people say “love this” but don’t enquire, chances are your message is missing the emotional spark that makes people care.

How to fix it

Start thinking less about what you want to say, and more about what you want people to feel. Do you want them to feel seen, inspired, relieved, understood? Once you know that, you can shape your words to match that emotion.

Connection comes from honesty, warmth, and empathy – not perfection.

5. You’re not backing your message up with proof

You might be the most talented, capable person in your field. But if your message doesn’t show that, people will hesitate.

A strong brand message isn’t just about big promises; it’s about giving people confidence you can deliver on them. That means showing your credibility – your experience, your results, your client wins – in ways that feel natural and authentic.

It also means writing with authority, showing you know what you’re talking about.

How to fix it

Weave small proof points into your messaging. Use testimonials, before-and-after examples, or stories that show the transformation you create. Even subtle cues like tone, confidence, and language help build trust.

Proof is about reassurance. It’s how people move from “I like what they say” to “I trust them to help me.”
