Free about me page template: Share your story with confidence

Written by Meghan Downs

We’ve all heard that we need to “show our personality” or “be more visible” online – but when it comes to actually sitting down and writing about yourself and your business story, it can feel really awkward, right?

In my experience, ‘about me’ pages seem to trip business owners up the most. And the tricky thing is, there’s no hard and fast rules – there’s only what feels ‘right’ for you.

As a website copywriter working with service-based creative businesses, I’m all about bringing more of YOU into your writing so your message does some of the selling for you and attracts the right people.

That’s why I’ve created a free about me page template for your website copy, so you can write your about me page with confidence. I’m also sharing useful tips on how to make the most of this template and tell your story effectively.

Why personality matters on your about page (and all other website copy!)

Here’s the deal… It’s vulnerable and uncomfortable to write in a way that feels like we’re “selling ourselves” or “bragging”.

But it’s also necessary, as people don’t just buy your services – they buy into you. When your personality and confidence in yourself comes through in your message, it builds trust and helps you stand out in a sea of sameness.

Great about page copy doesn’t just list credentials. It connects on a human level.

The perfect balance comes when you merge what you want to say (showing your personality and experience) with what your audience needs to hear (to remove any potential doubts that you’re the best choice for them).

How to write an about me page: What to include (and what to leave out)

Not sure where to start with your about page? My free about page template is packed with flexible prompts that work across most service-based businesses.

But even if you don’t use it, here’s the golden rule: Your about me page is about you, but it should also speak to your audience.

It needs to show you’re the right fit – not just because you offer what they need, but because your values, story, and personality build trust.

You don’t need to list your life story or every job you’ve ever had. Instead, focus on the parts that create connection and credibility. A strong about me page usually covers these 5 things:

  1. What you do and how you help

  2. What makes you different
  3. Your story and journey
  4. Your mission or promise
  5. Your core values

You don’t need to go into huge detail about each element. For example, you can list your values in 3 words, or share your mission in a sentence.

The free about me page template breaks all this down into strategic sections, with prompts to make writing easier (and less cringe).

Different ways to tell your story on your about page

As I’ve already eluded to, there are endless possibilities when it comes to telling your story and writing your about page copy. But to narrow it down and give you focus, the main ‘story’ section in the free about me template has 3 suggested structures:

  1. A history of your experience
  2. Company timeline and key milestones
  3. The shared relatable experience

This gives you 3 different suggested structures to show a transition from where you’ve been, what you’ve learned, and why you’re in the best position to help your ideal clients today. Most business owners can relate to at least 1 of these options.

Pick and choose which story type feels most appropriate for you – or find your own way. The best copy comes with personalisation.

Highlighting what makes you unique

Some people freeze when I ask them what makes them different… so if you’re unsure of this too, you’re not alone.

One of the best ways to highlight this is by interviewing your existing current or past customers and simply asking them! Why did they choose you over others? What was it about your business that stood out?

It can feel awkward, but conducting voice of customer research is the perfect way to see your business through your ideal clients’ eyes.

Nail your about page to build trust, show your personality, and convert your ideal customers

Your about page copy should reflect your energy, your expertise, and what it feels like to work with you.

Writing your about page shouldn’t feel like pulling teeth.

The structure and support you need for copy that converts? That’s what my free template gives you, with:

  • A fill-in-the-blanks structure

  • Copywriting guidance from someone who does this for a living (hi 👋)

  • Clear prompts
